Male vs. Female
Both males and females make wonderful family pets. I have both sexes, and love every single one of them. Males tend to be a little more loving, and if neutered by 4 to 6 months old, they tend not to develop any of those "frowned upon" male traits such as lifting or humping. Females can be a little more independent than males. Females will generally come into heat when they around 6 months old, and spaying by this age will avoid their first heat cycle. Overall, I really believe it is personal preference (male vs. female) that makes the determining factor. .
